Tartuffe - Dorset Echo

Brought to town by Dorchester Arts Centre, the open air show had a small and modest set, a cast of only six actors and no sound amplification yet the whole thing worked wonderfully well, thanks to Bill Scott’s free translation, witty script and intelligent direction.

When wealthy nobleman Orgon befriends wayfarer Tartuffe and welcomes him into his household as his spiritual mentor, the rest of the family quickly see that their new visitor is nothing but an unscrupulous rogue.  In no time at all, Tartuffe has ousted the son, got himself engaged to be married to the daughter of the house and persuaded Orgon to hand over his entire fortune for the good of his soul. In desperation, the family decide to reveal the truth about their intruder to the naïve Orgon in a hilarious scene in which those voluminous 17th dresses take on a whole new and unexpected role.

An excellent cast take on more than one character and get into the spirit of this splendid production that captures the essence of Moliere’s masterpiece, giving it a modern slant while retaining its universal old fashioned appeal.
